The Enosoft Friendly DV Utility allows you to give your DV devices more meaningful names when connected to a Microsoft Windows XP or Vista computer.

Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit versions)

Whenever a DV device is connected to a computer running Microsoft Windows XP, the operating system creates a "friendly name" for it that is used to help identify the device. Specifically, the "friendly name" shows up in Windows Explorer/My Computer as an imaging device. For example, here there are three devices connected:

The names aren't necessarily very helpful. The Enosoft Friendly DV Utility lets you change these names.

Microsoft Windows XP (64-bit versions) and Vista (all versions)

The "Scanners and Cameras" folder feature doesn't work for DV devices with these versions of Microsoft Windows. However, the Enosoft Friendly DV Utility is still of benefit for use with the Enosoft DV Processor on these platforms.

Using the Utility

Launching the Enosoft Friendly DV Utility will display something similar to the following:

Any DV devices that have been connected to the computer will be listed even if they are not currently connected.

The "Original Name" is the name that the computer created when the device was first connected.

The "Current Name" is the name that the computer will display.

To change one or more names, simply edit the name under the "New Name" column:

When all changes have been made, press OK:

The program will change the names and then close. You can confirm the changes have been made by re-launching the utility:

The next time a device is connected, the new name will appear (if a device is already connected, the new name will not appear - you have to disconnect and reconnect the device):

Any applications that make use of the so-called "friendly names" will also show the new names. For example, the Enosoft DV Processor:

To restore all the names back to the original ones that the operating system created, press the Restore button in the utility program.
